The short answer: Mauritius is a year-round destination, but the best month depends on what you want to do. November to April is usually chosen for heat, warm water and beach holidays. May to October is more comfortable for hiking and long outdoor days. Kitesurfing depends on wind and coastline, not only air temperature. Humpback whales are more likely during the southern winter, while sperm whales may be seen around Mauritius throughout the year.
This is a climate guide, not a promise of a forecast. It is based on official information available on 5 September 2026. Averages help with choosing dates, but they cannot predict one specific day in one specific bay. Mauritius can have a short shower in one district while another part of the island remains sunny.
How Mauritius climate works
Mauritius has a tropical maritime climate. In practical travel planning, the year is usually divided into a warm, humid summer from about November to April and a cooler winter from June to September. May and October are transition months. The Mauritius Meteorological Services climate page gives a mean summer temperature of about 24.7°C and a mean winter temperature of about 20.4°C.
January and February are normally the warmest months, with an average island-wide daytime maximum of about 29.2°C. In July and August, night-time minimums can fall to around 16.4°C, especially inland and at higher elevations. The coast is milder, although wind can make it feel cooler.
Rain is unevenly distributed. Official long-term climatology identifies February and March as the wettest months and October as the driest. This does not mean continuous rain in February or no rain in October. Tropical showers can pass quickly, while a larger weather system can affect a boat trip for a whole day.
The central plateau around Curepipe and Vacoas is often cooler, cloudier and wetter than the west or north coast. The east and south feel the trade winds more strongly, while the west and north are often more sheltered. Do not transfer a Port Louis forecast mechanically to Le Morne or Belle Mare.
Coast-to-coast differences
The west coast, including Flic en Flac, Tamarin and Le Morne, is often chosen for sunny, sheltered beach conditions. This is not a guarantee of dry weather. Near Le Morne, wind can be strong even when a nearby beach is calm, which matters for kitesurfing and boat trips.
The north, around Grand Baie, Pereybere and Trou aux Biches, is practical for beaches and marine excursions. Check wind, swell and visibility before a boat, snorkelling or diving trip. The east, including Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce, is more open to the trade winds. That can be useful for kitesurfing but less comfortable for a calm swim. The south is often windier and wavier, but cooler weather can be pleasant for nature routes.
The centre should not be used to judge a beach day. Clouds may remain over the plateau while the coast is sunny. For Black River Gorges, Chamarel, waterfalls or mountain viewpoints, take a light rain jacket and allow extra time.
January to March: heat, humidity and showers
January, February and March are the most summery months. The sea is warm and daylight is good for beaches and boat trips, but humidity and showers are more likely. February and March have the highest long-term rainfall totals.
January suits travellers who want heat and warm water but can move plans around showers. Mornings are often better for hiking than the middle of the day. Trails can become slippery after rain.
February can be humid and wet. It works well for a flexible beach holiday, but less well for a tightly packed itinerary with a boat or mountain activity every day. Operators may postpone trips because of waves or thunderstorms.
March remains warm, although conditions can be variable. After heavy rain, visibility for snorkelling or diving may temporarily deteriorate. Keep a spare marine-activity day instead of scheduling the only boat trip on the day before departure.
The official tropical cyclone season in the south-west Indian Ocean is considered to run from 1 November to 15 May. Systems can occasionally form outside that period. This does not mean that every summer trip should be cancelled, but travellers should know where official warnings are published and how their hotel, airline and insurance handle changes.
April and May: the transition
April is often a useful compromise. The sea has warmed through summer, heat remains comfortable and prolonged rain is usually less likely than in February or March. It can suit beaches and diving, but marine conditions still need to be checked locally.
May begins the cooler pattern. Days can remain warm, while evenings and the central plateau need an extra layer. Wind becomes more noticeable on the east and south. For an active trip, May can be more comfortable than the peak of summer.
June to September: cooler air, wind, hiking and whales
Mauritian winter is not cold in the temperate sense, but wind and cool evenings are noticeable. The official 2026 winter outlook also stresses that a seasonal outlook describes tendencies, not day-to-day weather. Check the short-term forecast before each activity.
June is good for walks and excursions if you are ready for wind on exposed beaches. July and August are normally among the windiest months. This can benefit kitesurfing, especially at suitable east and south-west spots, but makes some boat trips less comfortable. On a mountain ridge, wind can be much stronger than at the car park.
September is often one of the drier months and is suitable for hiking, parks and a full sightseeing programme. The weather is gradually warming, but wind may remain.
Whale watching should be treated as a possibility, not a guarantee. Mauritius Now reports sperm whales as a year-round possibility and humpback migration during the southern winter, with dates varying by source and observations. Choose a licensed operator and never book a trip on the assumption that a particular animal must appear.
October to December: dry transition and return of summer
October is usually the driest month in official climatology. It is convenient for hiking and island drives, although a dry average does not eliminate clouds or local showers.
November becomes warmer and feels more summery. The sea is attractive for swimming and diving, but the official cyclone season also begins. The start of the season does not mean that a cyclone will affect your dates.
December suits travellers who want warm holidays. Coastal days are hot and humid, with a greater chance of afternoon rain. Leave room to move a boat trip and avoid the hottest hours for long hikes.
Best periods for specific activities
Beach and swimming: November to April, especially December to April, if heat and warm water are priorities. April is often a good compromise. From May to October, choose a sheltered bay according to wind.
Hiking: May to October is generally more comfortable for long climbs. Start early, check trail conditions after rain and remember that clouds can hide a view without making the route dangerous.
Kitesurfing: wind, lagoon conditions, local guidance and skill level matter more than a calendar. Mauritius Now often describes the season as April to November, with July and August particularly windy. Confirm the spot and conditions with an instructor.
Diving and snorkelling: warm summer water can be attractive, but visibility depends on swell, rain and the site. Ask the operator which sites are suitable that day and keep a spare day.
Whales: June to November is often considered for humpback sightings, but wild animals do not follow a timetable. Sperm whales may be present outside the migration period as well.
Planning around changing weather
Do not fill every day with a single non-refundable activity. Group plans by flexibility: one mountain day, one sea day, one reserve day and one short city or museum programme. Marine activities should not be placed only on the last possible day. A 24–48 hour move can save an itinerary.
Before an activity check rain probability, wind, swell, thunderstorms, visibility, road conditions and official warnings. For cyclones and torrential rain, use Mauritius Meteorological Services rather than an old screenshot or an undated chat forecast.
Pack a light rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, shoes for wet surfaces, a phone cover, repellent and a thin layer for the central plateau or evening wind. Families and older travellers should reduce long transfers and allow a slower day after rain or a rough sea.
Cyclones, heavy rain and safety
During cyclone season, follow official bulletins and instructions from your hotel, host or operator. Do not go to sea after a cancellation, stand near dangerous surf or cross flooded roads. Charge your phone, keep insurance contacts available and confirm cancellation rules before booking.
A seasonal average is not a forecast, and a sunny morning does not cancel an afternoon warning. The MMS website publishes observations, climate material and seasonal outlooks; use it before departure and during the trip.
A simple date choice
- Hot sea and beaches: December to April, with room for showers.
- Hiking and island drives: May to October, especially September and October.
- Kitesurfing: roughly April to November, confirmed by local wind conditions.
- Whales: consider June to November, without treating sightings as guaranteed.
- Fewer compromises: April–May or September–October with at least one reserve day.
Mauritius does not require one perfect season. Choose the priority — warm water, dry trails, wind, whales or an easy family pace — then compare the dates with the current forecast, coastline and operator rules.
